The Bio:

The SocialCoast Network was created to do some awesome shit. Our
mandate is to create and sustain a culture of community activism. We are
working to build a space where people can become engaged in the world around
them, and take an active role in changing Victoria and BC for the better.

This is no easy task however; media, politics and pop culture in
general are trying desperately to maintain the current culture of apathy. We
have been convinced that there is little reason to become active in changing
the community. We have been told that all politicians lie (so what’s the point
of voting), and we’ve been told that capitalism is a science (so it can never
be otherwise).

Our idea is to show people that becoming an ‘activist’ is not
only necessary to make changes happen, it is cool and accessible (and all your
friends are doing it).

We have begun by building an online network for community
activism: SocialCoast.org. It has become a
space for people across Victoria to engage in conversation, get updated on the
news and events, as well receive updates on local news.

The Awesome Shit:

Our numbers are growing daily, and we’ve had varieties of people
support our idea; from executive directors, to the unemployed, from anarchists
to mayoral candidates.

We are, at this point, at a crossroads. Our site needs upgrades,
and our projects are expanding. We have a sturdy foundation of volunteers that
are signed up to create a version 2.0. The plans are in place, however we need
a bit of funding for design, development, and videography work.

All of the work that we need done is deeply discounted through a
“friends and family” discount. Every dollar we spend gets us about
five dollars worth of services.

Besides the sweet new features on our website (events calendar,
monthly newsletter, promotional video, new layout) one of the most awesome-ist
things that we will create with our new funding is a parody news cast of
Victoria politics. One show per month, we are planning on launching the first
episode late January. This is a great way to appeal to our audience, through
comedy. A parody news cast will bring a unique perspective to Victoria
politics.

We have a space, we have an amazing team, and most of the technical
equipment is available, but we do need a bit of funding to continue these
projects.

Some other Stuff you May Want to Know:

Here is a breakdown of our budget needs:

Promotional Video – $150

Design and Development – $350

NewsCast Equipment – $175

SocialCoast is a community oriented initiative with a number of
smaller projects working off of it. All of these projects coming together
create an important and holistic approach to creating a culture of community
activism in and around Victoria.
