Floating Sauna

Dear Awesomites,

British Columbia has an incredible amount of beautiful lakes, inlets, and ocean waters. But when it comes to swimming in those waters, for most of us it’s just a little too cold, even in the summer! That is why the good folks at the BC Mobile Sauna Society want to build a floating Sauna in Vancouver’s surrounding waters. Not only do saunas bring people together in physical (non-virtual) space for meaningful interactions, saunas can be a bridge to new experiences of our surrounding environment, perhaps giving us new appreciation for those cold glacial-fed waters. Our awesome idea is to find a safe, suitable vessel, whether it be a dock, barge, or sailboat, and build a Finnish-style, cedar sauna into it. In the tradition of the BC Mobile Sauna Society community events, we will host year-round sauna gatherings in various locations across the Lower Mainland. Whether dropping anchor close to Third Beach, Kits Beach, or journeying to Deep Cove, we will be inviting people wherever we go to sauna in a fun, inclusive, non-judgmental atmosphere. Operating the sauna under the already existing BCMSS ensures that the core values of inclusion, accessibility, and healthy socialization will be maintained throughout this project.
