Global Warming confronts our species with a long-term crisis larger than the Second World War. There is insufficient alarm or focus for long-term coordinated action. Other species have many different flavoured alarms for different kinds of warnings. So do we. Suggest a new one for this … Pink Floyd’s One Slip, clip sounds from 0:32 to 0:37; a high-pitched electronic trill followed by a pause then a deep thud. A grab for the attention … it’s alarming. Follow it with the current score on the Keeling Curve, today’s number from Mauna Loa ~ 400.01 parts per million CO2. Science indicates a Global Warming temperature increase of 2ºC requires CO2 be no more than 350ppm (see 350.org). We are currently on track to a 4ºC rise, which may destabilize equilibrium and topple us into a different world. CO2‘s climb is accelerating. To those who would send our children to Hell, a word of caution: they may be smart enough to invite you to join them. Each newscast should have at least one bit of focus ~ the alarm trill, the CO2 score, some aspect of the unfolding crisis, and a piece of the strategy, work & hope for something better.
