The Vancouver Foundation’s Connections and Engagement report found that one in three Metro Vancouver residents believed it was difficult to make friends in Vancouver. One in four said that they were alone more than they would like to be. This was in 2012. Recent studies in America, surveying youth and adults, show an increase in depressive symptoms and loneliness. In fact, Gen Z has been declared the loneliest generation, according to the Monitoring the Future Study. For the last 3 years, I have been organizing dance parties based on social-bonding science, with the objective of rapidly catalyzing new social relationships, while simultaneously changing the reputation of Vancouver toward the most fun city on Earth. I have been interviewed by VICE media about my efforts (Link: https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/vbjjd8/how-a-sober-partying-movement-emerged-from-canadas-opioid-crisis). I have also been featured by Daily Hive 23 times, and am working with them on a mini documentary to feature my organization, VYVIFY.life. This preface is intended to display my credibility. I will actually follow through on this project, and it will have continuity in the social movement I have created. Now, regarding the project. The social isolation desolation dance floor is a battery powered, 4M x 4M, rug-like surface, which can be used to spark social connection in public spaces. The dance floor will be eye-catching, with flashing LED lights. It will be portable and dismantlable. During the summer, my team and I will set up the dance floor on a weekly basis and encourage passersby to participate and connect with others. Using our social-bonding methods, we will catalyze large-scale dance parties in public. We will then film our efforts and distribute the content online, inspiring others to dance, smile, and connect in public. With our connections at MakerLabs, we will build the dance floor. Leveraging my existing social media following (https://www.facebook.com/vyvify), we will promote public dance events, with the intention of spreading joy in public. We will distribute our content online through our existing channels. Throughout our efforts, our message will remain consistent: Human connection is key to a healthy, happy life. Join our community to experience more connection.
