Legalizing Psychedelic Medicine

Conventional therapies are often ineffective in treating a range of mental health conditions and restoring psychological wellbeing to patients in need. However, over the past 20 years, a growing body of scientific literature has demonstrated the safety and efficacy of psychedelic substances for the treatment of otherwise intractable psychological conditions. The results are remarkable: psychedelic-assisted treatments appear to alleviate depression and anxiety, heal trauma, and help combat addiction at unprecedented rates. For the last 6 months I’ve focused on raising awareness for psychedelic medicine in the provincial government. I’ve dedicated my spare time to researching high-leverage advocacy opportunities, connecting with potential collaborators, and presenting my ideas to groups of up to 80 people. Based on feedback I’ve received from meetings and presentations, it’s become clear that a need exists for an organization focused on advocating for psychedelic medicine in the Canadian context. After receiving significant interest from potential collaborators and presenting a research round on psychedelic medicine for the Ministry of Health in early February, I decided to create Canadians For Psychedelic Medicine. I’m applying for funding to cover expenses and complete development of the Canadians for Psychedelic Medicine website. This will serve as a platform for further advocacy, research, and coalition building. The website will offer informational resources and compelling evidence for the legalization of psychedelic medicine, collect an email list, provide a contact point, and create legitimacy for outreach and subsequent projects.
