Oral to Aural: Artificial Synaesthesia
As a form of artistic expression, I will subjectively analyze the taste of two contrasting
food items (i.e. one savory, one sweet) and create a dynamic sonic fingerprint for each by
translating the temporal taste characteristics into sonic frequencies, timbres and
amplitudes using recognizable instruments as well as modified, or processed, recorded
sound. I will perform each composition in 4.1 surround sound using an interactive
computer music system (Max/MSP) and a control surface (keyboard, mixer) as the
audience tastes the food (i.e. hor d’oeuvre followed by dessert), improvising using the
sound class created prior by responding to the eating style of the audience. The resulting
musical and oral experience will be moderately tonal, accessible, and tasty.
The work will be completed and performed for the Awesomers within one month upon
project approval.
