Your Awesome Shit:
I am currently living in an apartment that faces Douglas St. between Johnson and Yates. When I sit at my office table, I look at the people across the street waiting at the bus stop looking back at me. Some of these people are bored, sad, happy, tired etc. What I want to do is in the dead of winter (right now), and during rush-hour, I want to randomly show animated shorts from around the world – hitting people when they don’t expect it. I own a micro projector but I’d like to have sound for the people at the bus stop. So this means purchasing a cheap screen ($40), a USB FM transmitter ($200), and 4 cheap radios ($10) that I can duct tape to different areas of the bus stop. The equipment stated will all be bought from Ebay. This will be a live public installation from my apartment. I have absolutely no intentions of pushing neither intellectual nor political boundaries. The purpose of this awesome frivolous project is to liven up people’s spirits with animation during the winter months. If this flies, this shit’s gonna be awesome!!
Your Bio:
I am currently employed at the Royal Mcpherson. I usher, bartend, sell tickets, work
back stage etc. at the Royal and Mcpherson theatres. Sometimes, I work with world music artists as a tour manager. Other times, I daydream of frivolous projects such as the one proposed. I am the sound technician at Open Space gallery for the gallery’s new music program. I am the President of the Board for the Pacific Peoples’ Partnership – an organization that supports the aspirations of Pacific Islanders for peace, justice, environmental sustainability and development. I love good beer, European football, and my aim is to inspire and be inspired.
Anything else you think we should know:
One of my first forays into public installations was playing a recording made by a friend over the lunch hour radio at my high school. The recording went as follows, “Due to the recent low test scores, the teacher’s association has instituted that this recording be played over the lunch hour everyday…… LEARN, learn, leeeeaaaaarrrrnnnn…†The recording aptly named “learn†was heavily manipulated with different effects such as reverb, delay, and flange and was repeated for the entire lunch hour. Intertwined with the vocal effects was music by artists such as Skinny Puppy, Captain Beefheart, Velvet Underground, and Philip Glass. In 1999 I hitchhiked from the prairies to the WTO protests in Seattle. Civil disobedience with 2 hundred thousand people walking with 10 amazingly huge puppets, blocking downtown traffic alongside farmers from Korea, activists from Columbia, and indigenous peoples from Guatemala was awe inspiring!
