Your Awesome Shit:
When Pandora, the first woman of Greek Mythology opened the beautiful box she was supposed to keep hidden, she let out the dark things, despair, fear and toil. Only hope remained in the box.
The Pandora Arts Collective is Hope on canvas. Our motto, “that which creates itself cannot be destroyed”, means as we create art ourselves, we create ourselves and so, create something eternal… Inspiration is our source.
Our Pandora started when a government funded art therapy program ended. A few participants recreated it into its current form.
We are writers, painters, knitters, quilters, sketchers, photographers cut-and-pasters, story-tellers, dreamers, thinkers, believers, survivors, and everything in between. Our response to the world that marginalizes the poor, physically, mentally and emotionally challenged is ART.
When we gather at Fernwood, we bring our gifts as a creative community. We build connections through art and friendships. We welcome everyone, and nurture each other through understanding and acceptance.
It is the audacity of art, community through art and art through community. Your funds will help us “live” through our funding drought. Our studio will be open. We can breathe — and raise funds and awareness of our awesome program.
Your bio:
Born of the ashes of a funded, ministry “art as therapy†program, the Pandora Arts Collective Society (PACS) (www.pandoraarts.ca) membership, many of whom come from the mental health community, meet together two afternoons per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) to do artwork at the Fernwood Community Association (FCA) building.
We are an open group. We do not require ability or disability. Each member is self directed, though our facilitator provides arts guidance and support on request. We offer basic art supplies. Participants are asked to pay a small participation fee but these dues are often waived to promote inclusion.
PACS runs the little fernwood gallery, adjacent at the FCA. This gallery features new and emerging artists from PACS and the community. It offers these artists the opportunity to join in group shows. PACS also participates in the annual Fernwood Art Stroll each June. Last year we entertained 400 drop-in guests!
Our financial requirements are small. We pay for a small office, our facilitator, the phone and insurance. We survive on grants, and other benefactors in the community. We are a lean (VERY lean!) machine.
