Our Awesome shit:
We create strange shit. Awesome shit. Indescribable shit. In five years, SNAFU
has created eleven original shows – a high-powered blend of live theatre, dance,
acro-balancing, Japanese Butoh, puppetry, and lore.
If you browse the SNAFU website, you will notice that there are no videos of
past performances. The footage we do have we gathered by scrambling to rent
equipment which we had never used before (which button is “on”?) or had
filmed by friends (who we bribed with beer.) The footage is . . . patchy, at best.
If SNAFU possessed an HD video camera, we could film every show, every night.
We could make youtube trailer videos to reach a wider audience and document
our bizarre creative process.
We are often asked how our shows came to be – where these ideas come from.
The, often wordless, theatre that we create is difficult to describe using words.
With the help of Technology, we could interview cast members at their first
rehearsal and on opening night. We could interview that random man in the
audience who sobbed on an actor’s shoulder after the show finished, or the lady
who brought her (very large) dog to the nude outdoor performance in the
Heritage Gardens.
We could send snazzy, attractive HD video submissions to any of the many
European Dance Festivals. Imagine: we west coast weirdos put sleepy Victoria
on the global dance spotlight.
Bio:
SNAFU creates original live performances both collectively and through
director-driven creation. We are committed to providing accessible and
affordable live dance, theatre, and dance theatre.

Ingrid Hansen and Kathleen Greenfield are currently developing Gnomeward
Bound – a live show engaging the dream experiment of an offbeat Danish girl
named Kitt – targeted for an audience of “pretend grownups.” Audiences have
said the show is “like watching a Pixar cartoon–on acid.”
The show contains several miniature worlds brought to life with eccentric forms
of puppetry – tricks that can be perfected by rehearsing with a video camera, or
even projected live during the performance to enhance the scale – to make what
is tiny, monstrous.
Last year we took the Gnomeward Bound to the Calgary Fringe and this summer
we are touring several more Canadian Fringe cities.
We’ve also been selected by the Belfry theatre to develop and premiere the
sequel to Gnomeward Bound at the 2012 Spark Festival at the Belfry Theatre – an
awesome contract with a very modest budget.
We’ve done some research and for an HD camera with enough battery-life to
record a full show and a decent microphone, you need to spend at least $800.
Every little bit helps.

Gossip (What people have said about our current show, Gnomeward Bound):
“One of the more well-thought out fringe plays I’ve seen”
-CBC Radio
“Ingrid Hansen commands the bizarre. She champions it. I’ve never seen
anything like Gnomeward Bound. It made me laugh, it creeped me out, it
touched me emotionally, and reminded me that life can be tragic and beautiful at
the same time.”
