The Goblin Empire is a recreational-level dragon boat team based out
of the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre here in Victoria. Formed in
late 2008, we have competed in a number of local festivals including
the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival and the Nanaimo Dragon Boat
Festival. While we’re proud of our competitive achievements, our
greatest triumph was earning the Spirit Award at the 2010 Gorge Fest
and the 2010 Victoria Dragon Boat Festival with our enthusiasm,
sportsmanship and zany antics.
True to our motto of “Go big or go bigger”, this year we would like to
bring the Goblin Magic to a distant land. We have discussed the
possibility of travelling to Vancouver, Portland or perhaps even San
Francisco this year to participate in one of their dragon boat
festivals. This would be an expensive undertaking, however. We have
had some interest from possible corporate sponsors but nothing
concrete as of yet, so we will likely have to raise most or all of the
funds on our own.
If we are chosen for funding, we will apply the funds towards the
costs of participating in an away festival, which would include
registration fees, transportation and lodging. We would be sure to
document our adventures and share them with you, the Awesomites. You
would also of course have our eternal thanks. I’d have to check into
the legalities but perhaps we could even bestow the title of Honourary
Goblin upon each of you. How cool would that be?
