Using garbage to create art

I am so excited about Awesome Shit Club coming to Vancouver and I wish I had learned about it sooner than today.
I am sure you must be busy with looking through all the submissions so thank you for taking your time to consider my proposal, which is the following:

When I was in high school, I participated in the HWSS Garbage Fashion Show and created a dress made out of egg cartons that were donated from a local cake shop that I volunteered at (picture attached below). Creating art from garbage gave me inspiration to reconsider the value that can be created from garbage, and sparked curiosity in unexplored territories of media that can be used to create art. Due to funding cuts from the school district, my school’s art department lacked funding to buy new art supplies, and I believe other schools may also have had the same struggle.

This gave me the idea to connect local businesses with public schools to encourage businesses to donate their garbage so that students taking art classes can explore how “garbage” can be used to create art. This not only help schools to receive art materials for free, but also for businesses to reduce their ecological footprints. I will also discuss with art teachers to integrate sustainability as the topic for students to make art from the donated “garbage”. Ultimately, I will thrive for the sustainability-themed artworks to be exhibited at Science World.

I believe this project will spark exploration on the definition of garbage, encourage a new idea of recycling, and promote art education as well as concepts of sustainability.
