Community Libraries

I would like to build a set (4 to 8 depending on funds) of small community libraries, similar to the project at http://littlefreelibrary.org/. For this set, I’m thinking of doing themes, including kid’s books, mysteries, SciFi, etc. Obviously people will be free to put whatever books they want in there. Once built, these will be installed in parks throughout Vancouver. Please know that I’m not going to ask permission, I’m just going to install them in a way that is safe and does not damage the trees.

I’ve made a few of these in the past. The one below (now in East Van) was a favorite, but I’ve learned the hard way not to make them too large. The size of this set will be approximately 35cm high x 35cm wide x 25cm deep. They will be made from plywood and decorated with lasercut embellishments. The door will have some form of a door with window for protection from the elements, and they will be painted brightly. These will be art pieces as much as functional book storage. Funds will be used for materials. Time will be donated.
